BIC played a central role in the testing, commissioning and successful energization of FPL’s new 500/230 kV Sunbreak Substation, a strategically significant transmission node developed to strengthen grid capacity and support the interconnection of renewable-generation facilities throughout the region.
BIC’s principal scope encompassed protection and control (P&C) systems, including relay-panel commissioning, functional and operational testing, verification of protection and control schemes, and energization support. The team also performed cable and fiber terminations and provided targeted support for substation construction and communications activities, helping advance the facility through final system readiness and turnover. Sunbreak was designed to serve as a key originating and interconnection point for multiple planned 230 kV renewable-energy connections, including an approximately two-mile transmission link to the new Clover Substation supporting the 74.5 MW Clover Solar Energy Center, as well as additional transmission corridors serving other solar facilities. The engagement demonstrated BIC’s ability to integrate P&C, construction and fiber capabilities on a complex, high-voltage greenfield project while supporting safe energization and reliable system operation.
