Fiber Underground Installation Project
Client: Florida Power & Light (FPL)
Location: Dade County
Services: New Alston GIS substation construction
Project Type: Fiber pulling, termination, and testing
Haugland Energy (HE) was contracted by Florida Power & Light for a groundbreaking project manufactured by Taihan, involving the expansion of an existing electrical substation on Virginia Key, Florida. In addition, the project includes the installation of another transmission line spanning from Virginia Key, under Biscayne Bay, through Port of Miami on Dodge Island, and extending to Miami Beach. This effort enhances the power transmission network, connecting critical urban and coastal areas while improving reliability and energy resilience.
BIC was in turn subcontracted by HE to provide S&E services for Miami Beach / Virginia Key Substations Fiber Pull. The fiber was run between each sub underground through the intercoastal waterway in Miami Beach. The entire pull was 10,500 feet straight with no splices from control house to control house. This transmission line will play a vital role in strengthening the energy grid and ensuring a reliable power supply to Miami and the surrounding areas. The successful cable pull also highlights advancements in cable installation techniques, showcasing the expertise of BIC Electric.
