In 2026,Hitachi Energy together with Hydro-Québec, a leader in hydropower and large-scale transmission in Canada, and Transmission Developers (TDI), a developer of unique clean energy transmission projects, announced the start of commercial operations for the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) city-center infeed project. BIC supported this installation with primary apparatus and commissioning testing.
CHPE is underpinned by a 25-year contract with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) signed under New York's Tier 4 clean energy program. Under the contract, the line is expected to deliver around 10.4 TWh of hydropower annually from Hydro-Québec's reservoir system. CHPE is expected to deliver a range of environmental and economic benefits over its operating life. According to analysis cited by the developers, the line is forecast to reduce statewide electricity generation costs by approximately USD 17 billion over the first 25 years of operation and lower carbon dioxide emissions by an average of 3.9 million tons per year.
